Alpine Lynx Conservation Gains Momentum

(MENAFN) The Eurasian lynx population in the Slovenian Alps, a sanctuary for species adapted to high-altitude ecosystems and an important ecological corridor in Europe, is confronting a significant threat of decline.

In the ongoing Anadolu series "Europe's Peak: The Alps," which explores the effects of global warming on the Alpine region, the latest installment delves into the state of wildlife in the Slovenian Alps.

Slovenia, encompassing a portion of the Alps, features glacial valleys and high-mountain forests that serve as habitats for rare or endangered plants and animals.

The "Lynx LIFE Project," honored with Europe's Nature Conservation Award in 2025, is an international initiative dedicated to bolstering lynx populations across the Alpine range.

Speaking to Anadolu, Miha Marence of the Slovenian Forest Service emphasized the serious risk of decline facing this medium-sized wildcat.

He explained that, as part of the project, lynx have been relocated from the Carpathian region to prevent genetic isolation.

Marence added that the award recognized the project's success in enhancing genetic diversity and ensuring the effective reproduction of relocated lynx, while also promoting strong cooperation among institutions and local communities.
