Slovenia to Celebrate UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst for the First Time
SLOVENIA, September 10 - Established following a Slovenian initiative, the international day highlights the country’s special role in karst science, speleology and the research and protection of underground heritage. The inaugural celebration will include an international scientific conference, a central ceremony in Postojna Cave and a series of accompanying events.
Events will take place under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Nataša Pirc Musar, and the patronage of UNESCO, with the support and participation of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO, Postojna Cave, Škocjan Caves Park, the municipalities of Postojna and Pivka and the Speleological Association of Slovenia.
An important part of the inaugural celebration will be the international scientific conference Explore, Understand and Protect: Towards Sustainable Management of Caves and Karst, taking place in Postojna from 10 to 13 September. The conference will focus on cave and karst research, conservation and sustainable management.
The central ceremony will take place in Postojna Cave on Saturday, 12 September, bringing together scientists, speleologists, decision-makers, UNESCO representatives, members of the diplomatic corps and other Slovenian and international guests. The establishment of the international day following a Slovenian initiative is an important recognition of Slovenia’s long-standing contribution to karst science and speleology. It also draws attention to the importance of protecting caves and karst landscapes for future generations.
