EU funding to strengthen biodiversity in the Triglav National Park
SLOVENIA, September 21 - The project is of strategic importance for nature conservation in Slovenia. It supports the implementation of national and EU nature protection objectives and contributes to the long-term preservation of natural heritage for future generations.
The investment aims to improve the conservation status of seven threatened species, including amphibians such as the yellow-bellied toad and the Italian crested newt, as well as birds such as the western capercaillie and the Eurasian three-toed woodpecker, and six important habitats, including species-rich dry and extensive grasslands, wetlands and wet woodlands and riparian wetlands) in Natura 2000 areas within the Triglav National Park. Their current conservation status is assessed as unfavourable-bad, with no improvement expected under current conditions. The planned measures will support the conservation and restoration of these habitats, improving conditions for the long-term survival of both habitats and species.
The €3,791,449.03 project will be implemented under Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027. It will receive €1,516,579.61 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiaries of the funding will be the public institution Triglav National Park, DOPPS – Birdlife Slovenia, the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Kranj, and the Slovenian Forest Service.
